- Biography/History:
-
George Cartwright (1869-1943) was Second Mate aboard the British ship "Allenshaw", on a voyage from Liverpool to Calcutta, when the ship was wrecked on Tristan da Cunha on 24 March 1893. He stayed on Tristan when the other survivors left the island, living with Captain Andrew Hagan, a Yankee whaler who had settled on Tristan in 1849. Cartwright married Hagan's daughter Mary Jane by whom he had had three children before they left Tristan. The Cartwright family left Tristan for Cape Town aboard HMS "Thrush" in October 1898. After ten years of marine surveying off South Africa, Cartwright and his family emigrated to Melbourne in 1908. Cartwright then plyed his trade as Mate of various ships off Australia and internationally.
