Engineer, inventor and writer. William A. (Bill) Gold was born in London in 1922. He graduated with a Bachlor of Science (Engineering) degree and, during the war, worked as an electronics engineer in a radio factory in London. In 1956, he emigrated to South Australia as an engineer in the PMG's Department, employed on a survey for a wide-band microwave radio link between Adelaide and Bordertown. Gold aspired to be a writer and in 1958 he had an article published in the Workers Education Association bulletin in Adelaide. In 1966, he retired and then resided in Geneva, Rome, Athens and London before returning to live in Australia.
Gold married Adelaide resident Patricia Little in 1970, and, in 1973, they moved to Canberra where he devoted his time to writing. He penned several books including novels, about 100 short stories and numerous articles, however his works were invariably rejected by publishers both in Australia and overseas. Gold gained media attention as an unpublished author and was named as the world's "least successful writer" in The Guinness book of records (22nd ed., 1975). In 1984, he self-published One best seller, his satirical look at the world of writing and publishing based partly on his own experiences. Gold died in Canberra in 2001.
