Judge and Governor-General. Ninian Martin Stephen was born in Nettlebed, Oxfordshire, in 1923 and migrated to Australia as a child. He was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne, and at the University of Melbourne. He completed his law degree in 1949 and by the 1960s he was one of Australia's leading constitutional and commercial lawyers. He was made a Queen's Counsel in 1966 and in 1970 was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Stephen was Justice of the High Court of Australia from 1972 to 1982 when he retired to take up appointment as Governor-General of Australia, an office he held until February 1989. Later Stephen chaired various Australian governmental and other bodies, including the Antarctic Foundation, Australian Banking Industry Ombudsman Council and the National Library of Australia. He has been honoured with numerous awards including a knighthood in the Order of Australia in 1982, and, in 1994, he received the rare distinction of a knighthood in the Order of the Garter.
