These three volumes are Summer 1879, Spring 1882 and Winter 1883. They contain articles, poems, stories and chess problems with water colour and pen and ink drawings. Articles include "A journey in Victoria", which concerns Australia as seen by an English traveller in the early nineteenth century. "Rambles in the old world", which describes travelling through Switzerland and "A few weeks in Scandinavia 1878".

The Birds Nest Magazine consisted of a single copy which was passed from hand to hand. It was edited and compiled by 'Birdie' Holdsworth. Contributors used bird's names as pseudonyms. Subscribers were supporters of an orphanage in Dublin, Ireland.
