Summary

The MS 8084 collection contains the following files: 1. Playwright files. Files containing manuscripts, correspondence, cuttings, programs, photographs and momorabilia. The playwrights include Judith Adamson, David Allen, Bert Bailey, Richard Beynon, Ron Blair, Michael Boddy, Bob Ellis, Alexander Buzo, Jack Davis, Alma De Groen, Louis Esson, Cliff Green, Dorothy Hewett, Jack Hibberd, Barry Humphries, Thomas Keneally, Peter Kenna, Ray Lawler, Merv Lilley, Sumner Locke-Elliott, Jim McNeill, David Malouf, Louis Nowra, Barry Oakley, Katharine Susannah Prichard, Betty Roland, Steele Rudd, Steve Spears, Patrick White and David Williamson. 2. Business files. Files containing correspondence, reports, minutes and financial statements, 1971-1989. Some of these files are not Currency Press archives but deal with the involvement of Katharine Brisbane and Phillip Parsons in various theatrical and cultural organisations. These include the Griffin Theatre Company, Australian National Playwrights Centre, Theatre Australia and the Australian Film Institute. 3. Miscellaneous papers including an album of photographs of book launchings and a file of theatre programs (122 boxes, 1 fol. box, 1 map folio).

The Acc01.299 instalment comprises correspondence, day files, scripts, music manuscripts, and contributions to the Companion to theatre in Australia (1 box, 21 cartons, 2 A3 cartons).

Biography/History

Currency Press is a perfoming arts specialist publisher. Katharine Brisbane and her husband, Dr Phillip Parsons, established the company in 1971 in Sydney. They set about publishing Australian drama, critical and historical writing on the performing arts in Australia as well as screenplays, study guides, works of reference and the works of most leading Australian playwrights.
