- Summary:

Brown, a saw miller, speaks of his years in the saw milling business working with his father for 25 years in the Mountain River area of the Huon Valley (Tasmania) using horses and bullocks to drag timber; how by the 1940s & 1950s fifteen sawmills were operating around Mountain River cutting apple cases for the local market & some hardwood for export to Victoria; how they used to use portable mills, a more beneficial practice for the environment whereby the sawdust was left in the bush allowing the soil to retain rich nutrients needed for regeneration; agricultural practices such as fallow farming and conservation practices such as selective logging which proved to be the better policy for the regeneration of quality timbers were carried out; how the supervision and inspection practices of Forestry Officers were considered to be stricter in the early years.
Brown, as a bushman and saw mill operator speaks of his concerns for the timber industry, supporting a more sustainable approach of selective logging; his involvement in the Forest Workers Association who put forward a submission to the Helsham Royal Commission during the late 1980s stating their case for better management of the forests and a more equitable arrangement for the allocation of cutting licences.
