Arthur 'Smithy' Smith, retired bushman, born in 1921, talks about his early life in the timber industry and on rural properties; his family travelling from one area to another and the conditions; how his mother's music was an important part of his life; joining the army; being captured by the Japanese; working on the Burma Siam railway and on the bridge over the River Kwai; his release and later life in Australia. A song written by Smith about his POW experiences is also included. Tapes 79A + 79B: Mouth organ: Playing and remembering his mother's tunes and songs.
