- Summary:

John Evans is a second generation farmer from the Murray Mallee region in eastern South Australia. By the 1950's the Evans family approach to farming was to place a higher priority on environmental concerns such as the conservation of native flora and fauna. In 1983 John, his father and brother signed the second Heritage Agreement on private land in South Australia, binding the family & subsequent owners never to clear agreed areas on the property. By the mid 1980s the South Australian government had set up a pioneering model of government and property owners cooperatively managing lands for production and conservation. With significant patches of the Murray Mallee now protected under Heritage Agreements, John and his son are part of a group of 15 landowners who formed the Mantung Muggea Land Management Group to control foxes, rabbits, feral cats and protect the threatened mallee fowl.
