- Summary:

Robin Buchanan, a teacher, speaks of how she was first inspired to look at her own environment more closely, rather than dismissing it as bush. In the 1960's her mother took her to her first meeting of the Society for Growing Australian Native Plants in Sydney. She studied biological sciences at Macquarie University from 1971-1975. Buchanan volunteered her services to the National Trust of Australia, at that time the organization looking after bushland in Sydney that had come to it by bequest. The National Parks & Wildlife Service was yet to be established. Her efforts were focused on developing management plans for bushlands in the Sydney area and outer regions. Buchanan's interests inspired her to publish a book on the topic and to go on and become a pioneering educator of bush regeneration in Australia.
Buchanan speaks of her concerns for the neglected bushlands surrounding our cities. In the 1970's she was one of a minority group living in Sydney who challenged the established methods to managing remnant urban bushland. Her approach to bush regeneration, highlighting the need to be concerned about the conservation of native flora in our cities was a new concept. This became the foundation of a new tertiary course on Urban Bushland Management she developed. Buchanan talks of how in 1988 she established herself as the first fulltime tertiary teacher of bush regeneration in Australia.
