This study has four key objectives: to describe the extent to which visaed immigrants seek assessment of their overseas qualifications at both the pre- and post-migration stages; to undertake a comparative evaluation of the time taken by various agencies to assess overseas qualifications; to provide an overview of the extent to which visaed immigrants achieve successful qualification assessment outcomes; and to examine the impact non-assessment and negative assessment outcomes have on the labour market outcomes of visaed immigrants. Two indicators of labour market adjustment problems are highlighted in this study. These are unemployment and the extent to which those visaed immigrants who gain employment do so in occupations which are not matched to their field of study. The latter condition is termed occupational mismatch underemployment (OMU). The study is restricted to an analysis of the qualifications assessment experience of principle applicants. Migrating spouses are typically not required to undergo formal pre-migration assessments of their overseas qualifications. Moreover, despite recent moves to encourage pre-migration assessment of the overseas qualifications of migrating spouses, migrating spouses may not receive the same opportunities for overseas qualifications assessment as principal applicants.
