Sir George Houston Reid, Premier of New South Wales and Prime Minister of Australia, was born at Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on 25th February 1845. His family moved to Melbourne in 1852. Reid early showed a strong interest in politics. In 1858 he became an office clerk, and in 1864 obtained a position in the Colonial Treasury, where he remained until 1878. In 1880 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for an East Sydney seat. Sir Henry Parkes in 1887 offered Reid a seat in his Cabinet, which Reid refused because he opposed Parkes's promotion of federation.
In the late 1850s he attended many of the public debates on manhood suffrage and other democratic reforms. His ability to see both sides of a controversial question accounted for his eventual undeserved reputation as a fence-sitter that in 1898 won him the soubriquet "Yes-No Reid". Reid entered the first Federal Parliament in 1901 as member for East Sydney and Leader of the Opposition. In the second Parliament (in April 1904) he combined with the labor Party to defeat the Deakin Protectionist ministry. Reid retired from Australian politics in 1908, and in February 1910 took up his appointments as the first High Commissioner for Australia in London. He died in London on 12 September 1918.
