Ranger was born in Kempsey in 1925. He speaks of his early years in the Nulla Creek area in N.S.W. and of the influences on his musical career. Ranger makes mention of artists such as Harry Tarrani (yodelling), Digger Kyle (Reginald Kyle), Digger's brother Neville (known as Clem Rogers), Slim Dusty, American Wilf Carter.
