Biography/History

Shakespeare worked on the Sydney Morning Herald for 10 years before joining his brothers in Canberra where their father had founded the Canberra Times in 1926. He retained chairmanship of the company from his father's death in 1938 until his own death in 1975; but relinquished the managing editorship in 1964 when the paper was sold to John Fairfax and Sons Ltd. Shakespeare was founder and Chairman of Directors of Canberra Television Limited who were granted a TV licence in 1960. He was associated with a wide variety of local affairs, was a member of the A.C.T. Legislative Council and was a life member of the N.S.W. Country Press Association.
