This is a comprehensive study of Australian literature from 1788 until 1995. This monograph is of great value as it covers a broad range of topics in an in depth fashion. It is split into three periods: the period of colonialism from 1788-18888, the period of two world wars from 1914-1943, and the contemporary period from 1946-1995. Each section begins with a survey and overview of the general themes of that period and the historical background to the literary movements. Following this are studies in the major genres of the era and the works of particular authors and the authors themselves. Most Australian authors receive mention in this book. Some authors, like Hope and White, receive the attention of whole chapters. The chapter topics are as follows: Part One-fiction and poetry. Part Two-Henry Lawson, Joseph Furphy, Steele Rudd and Louis Stone, other writers, poets A.B Paterson, Christopher Brennan and Shaun Neilson, other poets. Part Three-Henry Handel Richardson and her novels of European tradition, Novelists of the Lawson School, Novelists Christina Stead, Xavier Herbert and Eleanor Dark, Poets Kenneth Slessor, Robert Fitzgerald and Douglas Stewart, and two other minor poetic movements. Part 4-Martin Boyd and His 'International Novels', Patrick White, Novels of the White School, Novelists of Realism, Novelists of 'Ne Writing', Major Novelists of 1980s and 1990s, the scholar poet AD.
