McRae speaks about his early childhood with his parents and extended family. He was removed from his parents at around the age of 5 and placed at Seaforth Children's Home, S. Aust. Within 12 months, he was transferred to Glandore Boys' Home and then was fostered out to a family in the Adelaide suburb of Burnside. At the age of 8 he was transferred to another institution before being fostered out to various families. McRae explains the difficulty for a foster child to trust again and bond with a foster family and the long-term effects of the childhood separation from his parents.
