Summary

MS 8016 comprises typescript and manuscript drafts of short stories, plays and poems, and children's letters, dating from Kevin Hart's school days through to the late 1980s. It also includes diaries, journals, notebooks, lecture notes, poetry in translation, scripts of ABC broadcasts, photographs, newscuttings, thesis proposal, teaching notes and a collection of broadsheets published by Open Door Press in the late 1970s. The collection includes some unpublished poems by Alan Gould. Correspondents include A.D. Hope, Judith Wright, Gwen Harwood, R.F. Brissenden, Manning Clark, Ted Hughes, Barbara Giles, Henry Hart, Paul Kavanagh, Pierre Chapuis, Ian Hamilton, Stephen Greenblatt, Alvin Feinman, the CAE, ABC and The Sydney morning herald (9 boxes).

The Acc02.199 instalment comprises correspondence, including with Derrida, poetry, press cuttings, essays and writings by Hart and others, and translations by Hart (2 cartons).

The Acc02.215 instalment mainly comprises word-processed drafts of poety and prose (1 A3 carton, 1 small carton).

The Acc07.064 instalment comprises drafts of poems, correspondence, diaries, 1987-1994, and typescripts of Hart's writings including The dark gaze; Postmodernism: a beginner's guide (2004); The power of contestation; Derrida and religion; and, Nowhere without no: in memory of Maurice Blanchot (2003). There is also a copy of Thomas Aquinas' Summa theological previously owned and annotated by A.D. Hope (10 boxes).

Biography/History

Poet and academic. Kevin Hart was born in Essex, England in 1954 and studied linguistics and philosophy at the Australian National University prior to completing doctoral studies at Monash University in 1986. Hart's poetry, which often deals with religious themes, first appeared in 1975. He won the FAW John Shaw Neilson Award in 1976 and his first volume of poetry, The departure, was published in 1978. Since then he has won other awards, including the Grace Leven Prize twice. He has written on A.D. Hope and other poets, works on literary theory and translations. Hart has held various academic posts, including at Deakin University, and in 2002 he was appointed to the Chair in Philosophy and as Professor of English at Notre Dame University in Indiana, United States.
