Kevin Hart was born in Essex, England in 1954 and studied linguistics and philosophy at the Australian National University prior to completing doctoral studies at Monash University in 1986. Hart's poetry, which often deals with religious themes, first appeared in 1975. He won the FAW John Shaw Neilson Award in 1976 and his first volume of poetry, The departure, was published in 1978. Since then he has won other awards, including the Grace Leven Prize twice. He has written on A.D. Hope and other poets, works on literary theory and translations.
