Soldier, bookseller, publisher and writer. Alexander William Sheppard was born of English parents in Melbourne in 1913. He attended state schools and Melbourne University where he studied law. He learnt Greek and became fluent in other European languages as well. During the Second World War, Sheppard served in Greece as a colonel in the A.I.F. and was awarded the Military Cross for distinguished action during the A.I.F. evacuation from Greece in April 1941. From 1946 to 1948 he headed the British Economic Mission in northern Greece making a personal report in the House of Commons to the Foreign Affairs Committee. Later, in Australia, he became chairman of the Committee for the Restoration of Democracy in Greece. Following the war, Sheppard pursued a career as a bookseller and publisher through his bookselling business in Bathurst Street, Sydney, and, in the 1960s, he lead a campaign to liberalise book censorship.
