- Biography/History:
-
Charity leader and pioneer of women's rights. A member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Mary Elizabeth Windeyer (née Bolton) was elected inaugural president of the Womanhood Suffrage League of New South Wales, established in 1891. She was also the co-founder of the Ashfield Infants' Home and the Temporary Aid Society. In 1893, her support of a women's hospital led to the establishment of a district service that became the Women's Hospital in Crown Street, Sydney. With her daughter Margaret and others, she also advocated the establishment of a women's college at the University of Sydney. Lady Windeyer was the wife of Sir William Charles Windeyer (1834-1897), judge, law reformer, politician and chancellor of Sydney University.
Lady Windeyer's daughter Margaret, a librarian, shared her mother's aspirations for the advancement of women's opportunities and political rights. She was appointed a commissioner to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and, in Australia, was involved in feminist activities through her work with the Professional Women Workers Association and the National Council of Women, among other organisations. She also served on the council of the Women's College of the University of Sydney, 1907-1939.
