Professor Peter C. Doherty received his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Veterinary Science in the 1960s from the University of Queensland and later was awarded his doctorate in 1970 at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a Research Fellow in the Dept. of Microbiology, John Curtin School of Medical Research in 1972-75. During this time Doherty with colleague Rolf Zinkernagel undertook the ground-breaking research on how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells that would later result in both gaining the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He held the Professorship of Immunology at Philadephia's Wistar Institute from 1975-1982, headed the John Curtin School of Medical Research, 1982-1988, and currently the position of Director of Immunology at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
