Description [1915]
1 album (184 photographs) : gelatin silver ; 8.2 x 5.1cm and smaller.

Documents the journey of Victoria's 8th Light Horse Regiment of the Third Light Horse Brigade as they sail from Port Melbourne, Vic. aboard the troopship Star of Victoria on Feb. 24, 1915, then to Albany, W.A. crossing to Colombo then Port Said and finally landing at Suez around April 4. The 3rd Light Horse Brigade also included the 10th Light Horse Regiment which had already left Albany on Feb. 8 on the Mashobra & Feb. 17, followed by the 9th Light Horse Regiment on Feb. 11 on the Karoo and the Armidale departing Melbourne. They then journeyed by train 6-7 hours to Mena Camp on the outskirts of Cairo, and where the whole Brigade was assembled for the first time. Following the decision to continue onto the Dardanelles as dismounted troops, the Brigade was relocated at the end of April to Heliopolis, then a satellite town of Cairo, and set up camp at the Racecourse. The Brigade left Egypt on May 14 when the 8th & 9th Light Horse Regiments boarded the Menominee at Alexandria for Gallipoli.

On May 18 the Menominee arrived at Gallipoli Peninsula but were diverted to Lemnos Harbour due to submarine threat. Aboard the Lutzow the 2nd Light Horse Brigade & 10th Light Horse Regiment disembarked at Anzac Beach on May 20 and on May 21 the 8th and 9th Regiments came ashore from speedy destroyers to which they had transferred while at Lemnos. The men spent much of their time maintaining and digging new trenches and tunnels while camps were subject to sudden bomb attacks. As the heat increased in June there were outbreaks of disease due to poor sanitation and the constant stench of unburied dead bodies. The 8th Light Horse Regiment was based in the trenches opposite The Nek and from June 27 withstood Turkish aggression including their attack on June 30 with only 7 Allied casualties. But under the plan of a new Allied offensive the Battle of the Nek on Aug. 7 proved a military disaster for the Australians and in particular the 8th Light Horse Regiment of 300 men which suffered 234 casualties.
