The Bible is written in Amharic script, the official language of Ethiopia. Amharic is a Semitic language belonging to the Ethiopic group of Hamito-Semitic languages. The official church of Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Christian Church, is related to the Coptic Orthodox Church - the head (or abuna) is named by the Coptic patriarch. Under Emperor Haile Selassie (1892-1975) Ethiopia claimed to be the world's oldest Christian empire, tracing its lineage back to c. 1000 B.C. through a union between Solomon and the Queen of Sheba (identifed with Ethiopia), although it was probably not until the 4th century A.D. that an Ethiopian monarch was converted to Christianity by Frumentius of Tyre, a bishop consecrated by the patriarch of Alexandria. A strong tradition of Biblical exegesis (based on the Geez or classical Ethiopic translation of the Septaugint) sprang up after a new dynasty, supposedly a revival of the Solomonic line, was established c. 1270. This particular Bible is made up of vellum pages bound with wooden covers.
