Summary

Tape 1- Sir John Bunting, a prominent public servant, discusses school days, early life. Trinity Grammar, University of Melbourne, Arts course in Economics, joining Public Service in Trade and Customs. Tape 2 - Early days in the Public Service, Canberra, Dept of Trade and Customs. Describes life there immediately post-war and fellow public servants. Post-War Reconstruction and important figures involved in it. Sent to Sydney, Trade and Customs - Import Procurement, then sent to London with Secretary of Treasury for 3 mths. On return joined Dollar Import Licensing Committee. When Post-War Reconstruction eventually wound up Sir John was pu into the Prime Minister's Dept. Tape 3 - Deals with Prime Minister's Dept. and Cabinet. Tape 4 - Workings of Cabinet. Tape 5 - Mr Menzies and the press. Talks about Prime Ministers in personal terms. Mr Chifley, Mr Menzies. Tape 7 - Speaking on Mr Holt, John McEwen, John Gorton, W. McMahon. Tape 8 - Mr Whitlam. Various colleagues of great value in the Public Service.
