Ian Hogbin, an anthropologist, talks about his family background; coming to Australia in 1914; schooling at Fort Street Boys High School ; postgraduate involvement in anthropology and his first geological expedition. He then discusses his experiences in the field as an anthropologist; the various communities that he has worked with in New Guinea and Samoa and the situation of contract labour in New Guinea. Hogbin, a member of the staff of the Anthropology Dept. of University of Sydney from 1936-1969, gives his views on the broadening of the study of anthropology and his opinion of Radcliffe-Brown and Malinowski. He talks about his work during WWII as a member of the British Solomon Islands Defence Force and the AIF. Hogbin also discusses his political affiliations and his interest in art, architecture and mosaics.
