Born in Newtown, Sydney, Best gives a brief account of his early life and then speaks in more detail of his employment as an office boy, then salesman for Dymocks bookship ; his favourite books ; father's employment ; experiences working on the railways ; brothers and sisters ; compulsory military training ; his education ; experiences during 1917 general strike, memories of the time and life when he was on strike, scabs, unions ; playing in various brass bands ; his career and different positions held on railways, his work, conditions at workshops at Eveleigh and Chullora, equipment used ; listening to speakers in the Domain ; communists ; politics of the 1920s ; involvement with Ambulance Corps on railways ; the Safety First movement ; involvement with the Labor Party.
