- Summary:

"Luggers at Streeter's Jetty, Broome. During the spring tides luggers would moor alongside the jetty in order to unload the pearl shell which had been collected from nearby fishing grounds. The Jetty, situated at the top end of Dampier Creek, was only accessible during the very high tides which are in excess of ten metres. When the tides reseeded luggers were left resting in the mud of the mangrove creek and, in order to prevent them from rolling too far over, were propped up by hessian sacks full of sand. The photograph was taken in 1979. Since that time the traditional luggers have been displaced and modern 'factory' ships are used to collect and store live shell from farms".
"Strict quotas on the amount of new shell which can be collected have been imposed and more efficient use of seeding techniques, aboard the modern ships and landbased laboratories, have ensured the future of the industry. The jetty has recently been built as part of a proposed historical precinct and the series of photographs from which this image was taken were used as reference for the work. The boat in the left foreground of the image is "Dawn". It was said that she was used to smuggle arms to Fretelin fighters in East Timor in the late 1970's."--Notes from the artist.
