Nairand Kay speaks about her role as a President of the Khmer Community in N.S.W. She recalls her family's arrival in Australia 1984 from a Thai border camp and having served 2 years in a Cambodian prison; her first job as a Khmer interpreter for the N.S.W. Dept. of Social Security; her second job as a Khmer teacher's aide at a school in Fairfield, N.S.W.; her marriage to an Australian in 1994; her experiences in the Thai refugee camp; sponsorship of her & members of her family to come to Australia by the Khmer Community in NSW & later the Granville Baptist Church, N.S.W.; family life in Cambodia before and after the Pol Pot led Communist overthrow of the government (1975-1979); English classess at night at the local TAFE in Granville, N.S.W.
Kay speaks about her job as an interpreter at Centrelink (Federal Government agency), which developed into a broader role assisting numerous groups, including elderly refugees seeking pension assistance; programs run by the Khmer Community addressing social issues faced by the Cambodian community in New South Wales.
