Summary

Sir Leonard Huxley, academic, on the work of J. S. Townsend, physics pioneer, describes the work of J. S. Townsend in the field of atomic physics and electrical discharges in gases. He also talks about the interaction between Townsend and J.J. Thompson during Townsend's time at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge. Sir J.J. Thompson was the celebrated head of the Cavendish from 1884-1919. Huxley describes Townsend's work at the Cavendish in the years around the turn of the century before Townsend was appointed as Wyckham Professor of Physics at Oxford.
