Lech Paszkowski, writer, historian, biographer, journalist and Polish Australian, was born in Warsaw, Poland 1919. He recalls that both his parents were artists and that he grew up immersed in the intellectual life of Poland; upon matriculating to university in 1938 his education was interrupted by national service and the following year he was taken as a prisoner of war and held in Mecklenburg, Germany for the next five years; camp life in Germany after WWII; emigration to Australia in from France; reasons for not repatriating to Poland; being sponsored by his mother's relatives who had settled in Australia in 1912; emigrating to Australia in 1948; negative features of Australian society towards migrants in the 1950s-1960s; his role in establishing the Polish Association in Victoria (1949); brief history of Polish community organisations in Victoria since 1863; his early life & work in Melbourne.
