Carr, a farmer, speaks of the hardships of rural life caused by war following the Depression, the widowhood of his mother, and the severe droughts of the 1940s giving way to dawning prosperity in the 1950s, how his own schooling was done by correspondence and later subsidised school attendance at Hay School in Sydney, how he returned home in 1950 to work on the property thereafter, how he developed bores on the property as the money allowed but from 1968 the use of bulk power and electric pumps for irrigation superceded this, gives details of irrigation systems used and the water charges, the effect of periodic drought on irrigation-reliant farmers and the costs entailed, how technology such as laser planing and land grading for channels impacted, recalls earlier irrigation attempts in the Lachlan area and the labour supply, the problem of salinity demanding good land management.
