Summary

Mrs Yvonne Winter, Director of Nursing, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, talks about her early school days and leaving school at 14. She then discusses her decision to go into nursing; training involved at Rachel Forster Hospital (Sydney); working as a nurse educator at the School of Training; need for nurses to use and understand new technology while maintaining a caring attitude towards patients also that they should complete their three years training before being put into a ward situation. She also speaks about the different diseases and conditions dealt with in hospitals today; the difficulties in treating drug and alcohol patients and problems of cross infection. Winter also considers the changes in nursing such as male nurses, changing attitudes to nurses' uniforms and increasing numbers of female doctors and how she herself reached the position of Director of Nursing.

She also talks about the changes in nurses' lives since the beginning of the century; inadequacies of present pay structure; costs involved in running a hospital and some of the changes she would like introduced. Winter also talks about changes in neonatal nursing and midwifery as well as her duties as Matron.
