Mary Broughton maintained journal entries from the time of her family's departure from Sydney to return to England. Mary's journal began on board the Barque 'Henry' in July 1834 and finished at Canterbury on the 10th of October 1835. She kept a diary documenting her time in Sydney between 1 January 1837 to 13 December 1838. Her diary writings include daily events such as places visited, church services attended and visits to and from friends.

Mary Phoebe Broughton was the daughter of William Grant Broughton, the first Church of England Bishop of Australia. Born in England, she emigrated with her family to Sydney aboard the convict ship 'John', arriving 13 September 1829.

- Mary's mother Sarah Broughton, wife of Bishop W. G. Broughton, also kept a diary recording the family's departure from Sydney in 1834 and their stay in England up to February 1836.
