Chape, an itinerent bush worker, speaks of his itinerent working life without the benefits of more than a few months education, speaks of his parents' marriage in 1910 at Walgett, how his mother ran several local pubs, and his father managed Youendah station, how his father worked on different stations and with teams, how he himself had worked from age 12 in the Walgett district until 1935 when he went horse-breaking in southwest Queensland, then back in the Walgett area from 1942, how he joined the Army, how he acquired more reading, how he got his own horse team aster the war, went delving bore drains and sinking tanks, how he managed the mathematics in his head, how he regretted his decision to knock back a soldier settlement block at Bourke after the war, his recent experience as a share farmer, country life on the big local properties and wages at different periods.
