Summary

The monument was erected in 1938 and officially opened in 1939 during the Queanbeyan Centenary Celebrations to commemorate William James Farrer (1845-1906), the famous wheat experimentalist who developed rust-resistant strains of wheat on his property "Lambrigg", at Tharwa. To honour this remarkable pioneer, the Commonwealth printed his picture on the old $2 note.

The plaque on the monument reads: "Australia's world famed wheat breeder - Born 3rd April 1845 - Died 16th April 1906 - I want to think when the end co... [comes?] that my life {...} bee... {been?} ...".
