Notes

"... Pubd. 2d. Augt. 1838 ..."

This map by John Arrowsmith is based on the map of Southeastern Australia produced by Thomas Mitchell, and the three pioneer expeditions he led over the period 1831-1836. It includes Mitchell's surveying of the Nineteen Counties as well as provides a legend entitled "Routes of travellers into the interior" charting pioneer discoveries from Oxley in 1817 to Bourke in 1837 plus a listing of the 19 counties clustered around Sydney. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights.

Tooley comments that this map is based on Arrowsmith's 1834 map entitled "Map of the discoveries in Australia"; the tracks of explorers include Mitchell, 1832-1836, and Bourke, 1837; South Australia is now named and given bounds; the course of the river Darling is clearly shown; much additional detail has been added to Victoria [Australia Felix]. There are many omissions compared to later versions: virtually no interior detail is given for the County of Gloucester, and the tracks of Hume and Hovell are shown in colour only but are not named.
