Ginibi speaks of the tribal history of the Bundjalung people; her grandfather Sam Anderson the famous Aboriginal cricketer; her grandparents; her father who worked for the pastoralist Yabsley family; her early life at Box Ridge Aboriginal Mission at Coraki; how she was protected from being removed by the Aborigines Protection Board; how her father took her and her sister into the bush to transmit cultural knowledge of her people; her early schooling at Bonalbo, her move to Sydney (1949) to work as a trainee machinist; the occupations of her mother and sister; her liaison with Sam Griffin and the three children they had, the tragic deaths of her daughter Pearl (1969), followed by her eldest son Bill (1970), living conditions on Gunnedah Hill, Coonabarabran; her return to her parents; Gordon Campbell with whom she had three children; her return to Coonabarabran; Peter Langford whom she married; her father's death; how she averted having her children separated when Langford proposed marriage; how as a sole parent she supported her eight children on Gunnedah Hill.
Ginibi speaks about her relationship with Lance Marriott by whom she had a son and the breakdown of the relationship; how she came to write her first book in 1984; the circumstances which lead to the death of her child from a drug overdose and her own drinking problems; the racial discrimination she experienced. She reads her own Preamble to the Australian Constitution as well as a letter to her father and another to her mother. She talks about her views on the impact political parties policies have had on Aboriginals in Australian society today; how she came to receive an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Latrobe University; why she wrote her book Haunted by the Past; her 1990-1991 trips to Bundjalung country to research six Aboriginal missions; a lecture she gave at the Lismore Club in 1990; her commendation for a Human Rights Literary Award in 1998 for her first book; her views on human rights in Australia; her fear for her son during his incarceration owing to the high incidence of Aboriginal death in custody; her own health problems; her life, her current writing projects.
