MS 9172 comprises logs kept by Arthur Edward Dupuis covering several voyages and ships, including HMS Victory, Leander, Alacrity, Raleigh, Bittern, Highflyer, Euryalis, Immortalite, Diadem and Rapid. Places visited include China, Crimea, the United States of America and West Africa (2 v.). Included in the collection is a folder with two photographs of Dupuis and his tombstone, and manuscript biographical details.

Arthur Edward Dupuis (1838-1897) served as midshipman and junior officer in the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral. Dupuis was in command of HMS Rosario from 22 January 1874 to 12 October 1875 when the vessel was on the Australian station, based in Sydney. The Rosario participated in operations against "black birding", the illegal kidnapping of Pacific Islanders for the Queensland sugar plantations, and was the ship that went in chase of the notorious Bully Hayes.
