Deshong was removed from his mother at the age of 3 months and placed in a children's home in Townsville, Qld. until he was adopted by a white family. The adoption arrangement was not successful and he was eventually sent back to the children's home. He then ran away to Brisbane where he survived as a street kid before being placed in Wilston Youth Hostel. Later he was sent to Boystown but he again ran away, taking a train back to Townsville. He describes encountering a woman during the train journey and he later learned that she was his mother. Deshong began working but the instability of his childhood made it difficult for him to settle and he was eventually sentenced before the courts and sent to prison for 10 years. During his time in prison, he discovered his artistic talent and began rebuilding his life. He also established contact with his family, but his mother died before they could be reunited.
