Transcipts of Macintyre's memoirs and letters: 1. My Life, vol. 4, 1831-1867, selected pages (135-186) relating mainly to Macintyre's trip to Australia in 1835 on the Auriga. 2. The Great Voyage (3 vols.), relating to his voyage round the world in 1853. 3. Letter book 1835-1838. Letters written by Macintyre at sea on board the Auriga, at Hobart and Sydney. Correspondents include Edward Willis, Richard Willis, John Cross (Glasgow), Helen Macintyre & Arthur Willis. 4. Journal kept on board the Kinnear, 1840, on a voyage from Sydney to England.

Businessman and traveller. James Johnston Macintyre, born at Leith, Scotland. In 1835 Macintyre met Arthur Willis in London and entered into a business partnership with him to trade with New South Wales. Married Eliza Spicer in August 1935, just before setting sail for Sydney. He left the partnership with Willis in 1937 & returned to England in 1940. In 1853, he voyaged round the world. In 1858 Macintyre moved to Paignton in Devon where he wrote his life story. His great grand daughters have published his memoirs as A Merchant's Tales: the Adventures of a 19th Century Scottish Trader, Merlin Press, 1994.
