- Summary:
-
Over twenty years have passed since discrimination on the grounds of sex was made unlawful, yet women are still far from equal to men. In this compelling, new book, Sandra Fredman asks the question: why has the law had so little impact? She argues that it is due to inherent limitations within the legal framework. Based on a critique of theorists from Aristotle to Hayek, and a detailed analysis of social history, the book locates women's role within the family as a key contributory factor to their continued disadvantage within the paid workforce. Her conclusion is that society must value rather than penalize caring responsibilities, and that paid work must be restructured so that both men and women can be active participants in family life as well as in the paid workforce. The multidisciplinary approach taken by the author will ensure the book will have a wide appeal, particularly to those engaged in women's studies, labour lawyers, trade unionists, historians, and politicians.
