Summary

The papers include Garran's translation of Heinrich Heine's poetry; theatre, opera and concert programmes; books on Schubert's songs; a copy of Conditions of Peace (1919) and the Report of the Australian delegation to the eleventh assembly of the League of Nations (1930); correspondence giving details of Garran's years at Sydney Grammar School and his translations of German songs for Dorothy Helmich; letters written to Garran between 1888 and 1895; an album of newscuttings and four medals (in Pictorial Section: 161A, P127-30); typescript drafts with MS annotations of R. Gerran's translations of German leider into English; letters received by Sir Robert Garran and newspaper clippings relating to his work as a translator. Also includes 2 copies of menu for the dinner given for Sir Robert by officers of the Commonwealth Public Service on his retirement.

Biography/History

Robert Garran was Secretary to the Attorney-General's Dept. and Parliamentary draughtsman from 1901 to 1916 and Solicitor-General from 1917 to 1932. He is also remembered for his involvement in the drafting of the Constitution (1897-1898) and his scholarship in the classics, Australian constitution law, and German literature and music.
