Summary

Most of the papers in MS 9298 comprise correspondence, research material and drafts of The yellow lady: Australian impressions of Asia (Oxford University Press, 1992). The collection also includes papers on The male reasons (unpublished novel), book reviews and other writings, drafts of speeches and talks, official papers (relating to Broinowski's career in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and seminar and conference papers. The correspondents include Nicholas Jose, Peter Rushford, Martin Sharp, Don'o Kim, Carolina de Waart, Mark O'Connor, Christopher Koch, John Wolseley, Harold Williams, Peter Sculthorpe, Vincent Plush, Yasmine Gooneratne, Heja Chong, Jim Angel, Alfred W. McCoy, R.F. Brissenden, Solrun Hoaas, David Marr, Tim Bowden, Blanche d'Alpuget, Michael Costigan, Stephen Fitzgerald, Rick Thompson, Richard Woolcott, Gregory Clark, Henry Albinski, John Trotter, Bill Hayden, Erland H. Heginbotham and Thea Astley. Copies of many of Broinowski's letters are included (26 boxes).

The Acc06.114 instalment comprises primarily draft material and printed research material relating to About face and Yellow lady, together with correspondence, notes, speeches and articles. Also includes one computer disc labelled "Symposium" and five cassette tapes of various broadcasts (12 boxes).

Biography/History

Diplomat, journalist, author, academic and speaker. Alison Broinowski was born in Adelaide in 1941 and attended the University of Adelaide where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She joined the Department of External Affairs in 1963 and had postings to Japan and Jordan. She was counsellor to the United Nations in New York in 1989-1990. Broinowski also lived in Burma, Iran and the Philippines, and, as a journalist, travelled in Europe and the United States. On her return to Australia she was appointed as regional director in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Melbourne. Broinowski has published several works on Asian-Australian relations, including The yellow lady: Australian impressions of Asia (1992 and 1996) and About face: Asian accounts of Australia (2003). She is also the author of Adolescent or geriatric?: the future of the United Nations (2005), and The third try: can the UN work? (with James Wilkinson, 2005). In 2001 Broinowski received a Ph.D. from the Australian National University for her study on representations of Australia in ten Asian countries. Broinowski is a visiting fellow in the Centre for Asian Societies and Histories at the Australian National University and lives in Sydney.
