Reid Hartland speaks of her earliest years in Frankston at the outbreak of World War I; her friends and how they socialised; her two older brothers who were killed at Gallipoli; family move to Murrumbeena while she was at boarding school; her parents death by the time she was 16; living with her married sister; attending commercial art course and night school at the National Gallery of Victoria; working as an illustrator and commercial artist in Collins Street; how she travelled to England alone at age 19 to meet relatives then to Europe before returning to Melbourne; meeting her first husband Geoff Waters through the advertising business in Melbourne; their travels overseas returning to Australia at the outbreak of WWII; how she was widowed after only 5-6 years of marriage; while living in England she worked for Betty Keep a fashion editor for an Australian magazine and who supplied monthly articles on fashion and the London scene; Hartland discusses working for Fleet Street tabloids as a creative artist and fashion writer; joining the London Daily Telegraph as a fashion writer which required she visit the fashion shows in the European fashion houses of Paris, Florence and Rome; later covering the 'first ever' package tour to Greece; writing on travel, fashion and food; marrying her second husband Gordon Reid; maintaining her friendships with some other Australians living also in London; returning briefly for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games after 14 years absence; how her niece Yvonne Lennie had married Arthur Boyd and her assistance to them settling into London; continuing to work for the Daily Telegraph until 1992.
