MS 9197 comprises photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, dreamtime stories, two exhibition catalogues, a small amount of correspondence and some greeting cards designed by Byram Mansell. There are black and white photographs of many of Mansell's paintings, as well as of himself at work in his studio. Newspaper clippings and magazine articles are mostly about Mansell, his paintings and the related Aboriginal dreamtime stories. There are also photocopies of photographs of the interior of Mansell's house in Killara, and of his father's house at Double Bay in Sydney (1 box, 2 fol. boxes).

Artist. William Arthur Byram Mansell was educated at Scots College and Sydney Grammar school, and was also a student of the Académie Julian in Paris. As an art director in Hollywood in the 1920s, Mansell designed sets for Cecil B. de Mille. Mansell later became interested in Aboriginal art and became known for his paintings and murals in this style. He also wrote about Australian Aboriginal dreamtime stories. During his career Mansell executed commissions for the Commonwealth and New South Wales governments, Queen Elizabeth II, H.R.H. Princess Alexandra and Richard Nixon.
