Tanna was born to a Torres Strait Islander father and non-Indigenous mother. Her paternal grandmother cared her for until the age of 18 months when her mother was given parental rights. Subsequently she was raised by the parents of her mother's second husband at Hervey Bay, Qld. Tanna speaks about her childhood at Hervey Bay and her effort to trace her sister Cathy and their birth father.
