Diary of an emigrant, identified only as James, who sailed with his wife from Plymouth to Sydney in 1883 (Sept. 27th-Dec. 14th). His journey aboard the ship Pericles took 81 days, and his narrative includes frequent references to prevailing weather conditions and shipboard life. Appointed the constable to look after single women, James participated in many religious services aboard ship. His journal also refers to the health of passengers, discipline, food eaten and homesickness. There is frequent mention of a person named Jennie, possibly his child, who remained in England. Each daily entry notes the distance travelled by ship in miles. The final page of the transcript is a letter, dated Jan. 3 1884, written from Alexandria, Sydney, to his relatives at home.
