Mackay talks about her schooling at Yarra Park State School and Melbourne High School; Labor parents; introduction to the Communist Party by artist friends in Sydney about 1937 and becoming a Communist Party Central Committee 'functionary'. She then talks about the Marx classes she ran on Australian government and history and the writing of the text, "How Australia is governed." Mackay then talks about working during WWII; Menzies' efforts to ban the Communist Party; visiting Eastern Europe and difficulties encountered in returning to Australia after attending the 2nd World Peace Congress in Warsaw. She then describes her speaking tour in N.S.W. on behalf of the Peace Council and her work as the first Welfare Officer for the Seamen's Union.
