Our opening hours will be changing between Tuesday 24 December 2019 and Wednesday 1 January 2020.

All reading rooms will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening on 2 January. But you’ll still be able to visit our Exhibition Galleries, our children’s holiday space, WordPlay, and Bookshop from 9am-5pm (except on Christmas Day).Bookplate café will also be open during this period, but with varied hours.

Summary

Typescript manuscript of The Commonwealth Parliamentary Library, 1901-27, and the origins of the National Library of Australia, by Andrew and Margaret Osborn. Typescript manuscript of 'A legend in his lifetime: the career of Kenneth Binns and an account of the Commonwealth National Library, the forerunner of the National Library of Australia' by Andrew Osborn. Added in 2001: a letter to Osborn from Dymphna Cusack dated 19 July 1962, and a newspaper cutting.

Biography/History

A librarian, Osborn was on the staff of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library, later the Commonwealth National Library, from 1920-27. He worked at the New York Public Library and for the United Nations and was later Deputy Librarian, Harvard University from 1942-58. He was Librarian, University of Sydney, from 1959 until 1962, when he was appointed Professor of Librarianship, University of Pittsburgh. He wrote many papers on cataloguing and processing and his book on serials was studied by thousands of library students.
