The collection comprises 15 letters written mostly to Viscount Canterbury. The letters contain family news, Sydney climate, constitutional crisis in Victoria, progress of Canterbury's administration in Victoria and other matters. The correspondents include Sir William Thomas Denison, Lord Carnavon and Bishop of Fredericton.

John Henry Thomas Manners-Sutton became the Governor of Victoria in 1866 and the third Viscount Canterbury in 1869. See "ADB", vol. 3, p. 350-351.
