MS 6000 consists primarily of material collected by Andrews during her research into traditional social dance in Australia, although her political activism, medical research and personal interests are also represented in the collection. The collection comprises correspondence, handwritten notes, publications, photocopies of articles and book extracts, photographs and other graphic material (25 boxes, 1 elephant folio).
The Acc12.117 instalment comprises the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) Andrews received in 1994 for her contribution to Australian dance. The engraving on the medal verso reads "Shirley Aldythea Andrews" (1 packet).
- Biography/History:

Biochemist, Aboriginal rights activist, dancer, folklorist and writer. As senior biochemist at the Royal Park Psychiatric Hospital in Melbourne between 1953-1977 Shirley Andrews conducted research into the effects of bromide and lithium in the treatment of mental patients. She joined the Communist Party in 1945 and was active in the struggle for Aboriginal civil rights during the 1950s and 1960s. She was also involved in the Australian folk revival from the 1950s and was a recognised authority on traditional social dance. Andrews died in Melbourne in 2001.
